A Summer of Seagulls at AHS

As the Summer of the Seagull continues here at AHS, our ACO Maria came across yet another seagull in distress in Waretown, NJ last week.  This poor bird found himself in a real jam;  hooked, tangled, and in serious need of assistance.
Maria was able to capture the seagull easily and the more she examined this poor guy, the more she discovered!  Not only did he have a massive amount of line wrapped tightly around his foot, but the sinker was wrapped in there too, a hook was through his foot, and yet another hook went through his abdomen.  When you watch this video, keep in mind that Maria spent much more time than is shown here freeing him up.
After all gear was removed, the seagull was taken back to our facility to be examined by our veterinarian.  His wounds were treated and he had some much-needed rest until he was completely recovered.  Maria then took him back to the scene and released him, taking care to ensure that he was walking and flying well.
This is just one more of the many seagulls that have found themselves in real predicaments this summer and were rescued by our AHS Animal Control Officers.  We totally understand that accidents happen when you’re enjoying the waters here at the Jersey shore but please, dispose of fishing gear properly.  This can literally save lives.  If you see wildlife in distress, please contact your local Animal Control or call us at 609-693-1900.
