Welcome Clifford: The Big Red Tegu!

October 8, 2024

Rescued from a Newark, NJ parking lot, Clifford joins our team of Popcorn Park Animal Ambassadors as part of our education programs!

Meet Clifford, one of our newest rescued animals at Popcorn Park! Clifford was found roaming a parking lot in Newark, NJ, dehydrated and a little underweight. How he ended up there remains a mystery, but thankfully, Clifford was brought to us at Popcorn Park.

Since his arrival, Clifford has been steadily recovering in our Reptile House, where he now enjoys a spacious, temperature-controlled habitat. With his strength returning, he’s on the path to a full recovery, and we’re excited to watch his continued progress.

Red Tegus, like Clifford, are native to South America, but they’ve become popular pets in the U.S. because of their calm and relaxed nature. These fascinating reptiles are omnivores, enjoying a diet of eggs, meats, fruits, and vegetables.

Clifford, now full-grown at nearly 5 feet long, is easily recognized by his large jowls, a trait typical of male tegus. While other lizards might sport crests or spikes, male tegus display their manly jowls as part of their unique appearance.

We’re thrilled to announce that Clifford is joining our outreach and education programming as a Popcorn Park Animal Ambassador! He’ll be out and about, ready to meet the public and help educate others about his species and the importance of responsible pet ownership.

Want to support Clifford and our other animals at Popcorn Park? Consider donating to Popcorn Park or explore our education programs to learn how you can meet Clifford and other amazing creatures up close.

Every contribution helps us provide the best care for animals like Clifford!
