NJ Spotlight News Story Highlights Capacity Issues at AHS

A recent video, released by www.NJSpotlightNews.org, highlights struggles with rising intake numbers at AHS and animal shelters around the nation. The rising costs of pet care and pet supplies due to inflation alongside other issues has led to approximately 30% more animals entering our shelters than at this time last year.

Jerry Rosenthal, the CEO of the Associated Humane Societies, says the organization’s Newark shelter currently has 450 animals in its care, up from about 250 this time last year.

“It’s a problem afflicting shelters, primarily in major metropolitan areas,” Rosenthal said. “Everything’s more expensive these days — food, housing, and people have to make hard choices. Sometimes, you know, if they’re moving … their housing arrangements don’t allow them to bring an animal there.”
