Beating the Heat: Summer Fun & Ice Cream for Pups at AHS

July 19, 2024

This summer has been a scorcher, with temperatures soaring past 90 degrees almost daily. At the Associated Humane Societies, our dedicated staff and volunteers have been working tirelessly to ensure our dogs stay cool and comfortable during these heat waves.

To keep our dogs comfortable across all three AHS locations, we’ve implemented a variety of cooling strategies. From sprinklers and kiddie pools to additional trips to the lake and that special ice cream treat, we’re doing everything we can to provide relief from the heat. We’ve also made significant upgrades to our air conditioning systems to ensure our facilities can keep up with the high temperatures.

One of the most exciting ways we’ve been helping our pups beat the heat is by taking them on swimming trips to the local lake. The dogs absolutely love splashing around and cooling off in the water, and it’s a great way for them to get some exercise and have fun.

Our Dogs Got A Special Ice Cream Treat!

Back at our facilities, our staff whipped up a special frozen treat for our dogs: homemade dog ice cream! Made with bananas, Greek yogurt, and peanut butter, this delicious and healthy treat was a big hit with our furry friends. The dogs in our kennels couldn’t get enough of it, eagerly licking up every last bit.

You can make it at home for your own dogs:

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1 cup of Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup of peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free)

Instructions:

  1. Blend the bananas, Greek yogurt, and peanut butter until smooth.
  2. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays or silicone molds.
  3. Freeze for several hours or until completely solid.
  4. Serve to your pup and watch them enjoy!

Enrichment activities like these are vital for the overall wellbeing of our dogs. Not only do they provide a refreshing break from the heat, but they also stimulate the dogs mentally and physically, helping to reduce stress and improve their mood while they wait for their adoptive homes. Our staff is dedicated to providing these enrichment activities regularly, ensuring our dogs remain happy and healthy.

Our mission at AHS is to rescue dogs and provide the best possible care for them until they find their adoptive homes. Keeping our dogs comfortable and entertained is a crucial part of this mission. By providing enriching activities, we ensure that our dogs stay happy, healthy, and ready to meet their future families.

If you want to help us continue providing these wonderful enrichment activities, please consider making a donation. Your support helps us care for our animals and keeps them happy and healthy during their stay with us.
