A recent NBC segment brings awareness to AHS as space runs out in our Newark Shelter for dogs

A recent video, released by NBC, highlights struggles with rising intake numbers at AHS. We have seen an over 50% increase in the number of dogs coming into our shelters over the last two years, and need the support of our community to help us care for these animals in need.

Don Coltenback, Director of Animal Behavior at AHS, says, “We are seeing more and more surrenders. We are well over capacity… We seem to think it’s economy based, with a lot of people losing their jobs or evictions.”

Jerry Rosenthal, CEO of AHS, says of the ongoing problem, “It’s a problem afflicting shelters, primarily in major metropolitan areas,” Rosenthal said. “Everything’s more expensive these days — food, housing, and people have to make hard choices. Sometimes, you know, if they’re moving … their housing arrangements don’t allow them to bring an animal there.”
