After a lifetime of neglect, Ophelia finds safety at AHS
First off: We apologize for the graphic photos, but this is a situation that is graphic, heartbreaking, and downright criminal. Sadly, there’s no one to charge criminally in a case of blatant cruelty such as this, since this poor dog was just wandering the streets of Newark, NJ with no identification. Surely she would have died had she not been found on the hot, July day.
Besides her obvious horrendous condition, she was also suffering with pneumonia. Once again we ask, how could something like this happen? We’ll never know.
Ophelia was transferred from our Newark shelter to Forked River for recovery. We are in love with this little snorty lady! She’s about 5 years old and yes, she’s a disaster.
Her skin is infected, she has several masses that need looking into, her little cut-off ears have been treated for infections, and her joints are all over the place. It’s quite obvious that someone used this petite, pocket bully for nothing more than breeding purposes.
Her overall health must never had mattered much. It matters to us though, and we’re doing everything in our power to get her well again!
Ophelia is beyond sweet! She waddles up to everyone she sees like they’re her very best friend. Her bent, hairless tail wags like a propeller when you give her some attention. She is over-the-moon happy to spend some time with you, get a bath, get some treats, whatever…..as long as you’re treating her with kindness, she loves you. She is also pretty non-reactive to other gentle dogs too.
Ophelia is a work in progress, but we would love to see our good work continue in a home, as the shelter environment is not ideal for a dog in her compromised state.
Ophelia has beaten pneumonia and she’s working on getting her skin well as the moment.
Ophelia is in need of a fabulous foster home where she can continue with her treatment plan and recovery. We will provide the medications, YOU just provide the loving, safe home.
If you are interested in fostering Ophelia, please contact our foster coordinator at 609-693-1900 or laceyfoster@ahsppz.org for the details. If you’d like to adopt Ophelia, please fill out your application here: Adoption Application.
