AHS Rescues Stray Dogs from Puerto Rico After Hurricane Fiona Devastation

September 30, 2022

On September 29th, three dogs arrived at AHS’ Forked River location from Puerto Rico, as part of a widespread rescue initiative following the devastation of Hurricane Fiona.

The Sato Project Dog Rescue spearheaded efforts to assist four Puerto Rican shelters, all who received catastrophic damage from flooding and wind, in flying their animals off the island. 130 dogs and cats arrived at Morristown Airport on Thursday afternoon. Most likely would not have survived if left on the island.

The dogs and cats were distributed among 12 different animal rescues and shelters, including AHS. While the majority will be staying in New Jersey, some will be transported as far away as Rhode Island and Connecticut.

“While our primary focus will always be on the animals in New Jersey, AHS always stands ready to help out when natural disasters strike outside our state” says Jerry Rosenthal, CEO of Associated Humane Societies.

The dogs, Tamara, Wyatt, and Andres, are adjusting well after their journey and are receiving lots of care and love from our staff. Before arriving in New Jersey, all the animals were checked by a veterinarian. They received vaccinations and medical care and are all ready to find an adoptive family of their own!

The Sato Project is dedicated to rescuing abused and abandoned dogs from Puerto Rico. There are estimated to be half a million stray dogs roaming the island’s streets and beaches, all without access to food, fresh water, or veterinary care. The animal shelters are drastically overwhelmed, with a combined euthanasia rate of over 94%.

AHS is glad to be able to provide shelter for these three dogs. Tamara, Wyatt, and Andres are available for adoption. If interested in adoption, please contact office@ahsppz.org. If you would like to make a donation towards their care, you can do so via our ResQFund.
