Oreo’s Long-Eared Road to Recovery at AHS

Oreo Needs Your Help

We’ve seen our fair share of infected ears in the long-eared breeds of dogs over the years here at AHS, but not many have been as severe as poor Oreo, a 5 year old cocker spaniel that arrived in such a painful and infected state.

Oreo arrived in early September and on first glance, he appeared to be a plump, healthy, well-groomed little dog!  That is, until getting nearer to his poor ears.  Like so many of his breed, Oreo appeared to have suffered with severe ear infections throughout his life.

His painful ear canals were narrowed, hardened, and infected and he was so painful, in fact, that sedation was required for our veterinarian to grasp the full scope of his compromised ear health.  Examination revealed such damage to his ear canals that surgery would be necessary to remove them.

Oreo underwent TECA surgery at Garden State Veterinary Hospital in mid-October.  This extensive surgery involves removing both ear canals and although Oreo is now deaf, he will hopefully, be able to live a healthy, pain-free life going forward.  Oreo also underwent surgery to repair a cherry eye and we’re happy to say that finally, he’s on the mend and feeling like a brand new dog!

Oreo is eager for the day when his cone comes off and his pain-free ears can flap in the wind as he zooms around our exercise yard!  When that day comes, he will be ready to go off to a wonderful new home where he’ll get all of the love and attention that he deserves.  In the meantime, we hope that you will contribute to our ResQ Fund, to help offset the $8000 expense of this surgery that Oreo desperately needed.

Thanks so much for your support, and please stay tuned for further updates on Oreo! We’re so happy to announce that Oreo has found his forever home!
